Villagers Block Cyprus Highway in Waste Site Protests

17.04.2007

Nine people were injured and several cars were set on fire Tuesday by angry villagers blocking a main highway in Cyprus to protest a government decision to build a waste disposal plant in their area.

Police said that around 500 men, women and children from Lymbia took part in the demonstrations, blocking the motorway from the capital Nicosia to the main airport town of Larnaca.

They threw rocks and set fire to tyres and cars which they dropped from a bridge.

Nine people were taken to Larnaca hospital with minor injuries and the wife of the Lymbia council president was briefly detained as police diverted traffic to old rural roads.
